M&M is no more. He had disappeared about a month ago and last night ME found his remains. He is now in peace with his brother Mars.

M&M n'est plus. Il avait disparu il y a environ un mois et hier soir ME a trouvé ses restes. Il est maintenant en paix avec son frère Mars.

Not fast enough - Pas assez vite

Obviously, I haven't been knitting fast enough lately. I ran out of yarn!
I am knitting a square shawl in the round. Sounds suspicious right there, doesn't it? But no, be reassured, it works.
Anyway, I had three balls of yarn for the shawl. Upon finishing the first one, I thought I wouldn't have enough to finish, so I modified the pattern to make it smaller.
Upon finishing the second ball, I started having doubts again; maybe I still wasn't going to have enough. So while knitting the third and last ball, I started knitting faster and faster, glancing more and more often at that ball of yarn which was getting smaller and smaller way too fast!
Well yes, it's like when you're driving and you realize that you are running low on gas. What do you do? You start driving faster so that you can reach the gas station before running out of gas, no?
Same thing here.
Then comes a first phase of denial. If I hide the problem, then it will go away, right? So I put the ball in my knitting bag and stopped looking at it. Ah, much better! And I can knit much faster when I am not constantly staring at the ball! I was going to win the race with the yarn.
But then all a sudden, disaster! There is no more yarn coming out of the bag!
Second phase of denial: there must be a break in the yarn. So begins the frantic search through the bag for the remaining of the ball. But alas, reality must set in, there is no more... I didn't knit fast enough, I ran out of yarn!

I guess I just need to start over and knit faster this time!

Visiblement, je n'ai pas tricoté assez vite dernièrement. Je suis tombée à cours de laine !
Je suis en train de tricoter un châle carré en ronds. Semble suspicieux rien que là, non ? Mais rassurez-vous, ça marche.
Bon, j'avais trois pelotes de laine pour le châle. Après avoir terminé la première, j'ai pensé que je n'aurai pas assez pour finir, alors j'ai modifié le modèle pour le faire plus petit.
Après avoir terminé la deuxième pelote, j'ai commencé à avoir à nouveau des doutes; je n'allais peut-être pas avoir assez après tout. Alors en tricotant la troisième et dernière pelote, je me suis mise à tricoter de plus en plus vite, tout en jetant un coup d'oeil sur la pelote de plus en plus souvent tandis que celle-ci devenait de plus en plus petite bien trop rapidement !
Ben oui, c'est comme lorsque vous conduisez et que vous constatez qu'il ne vous reste que très peu d'essence. Que faites-vous ? Vous commencez à conduire plus vite afin que vous puissiez atteindre la pompe avant d'être à sec, non ?
Même chose ici.
Ensuite vient une première phase de reniement. Si je cache le problème, il va disparaître, pas vrai ? Alors j'ai mis la pelote dans mon sac de tricot et j'ai arrêté de la regarder. Ah, c'est beaucoup mieux ! Et je peux tricoter beaucoup plus vite lorsque je ne suis pas constamment en train de regarder la pelote ! Je vais gagner cette course contre la laine !
Mais tout à coup, désastre ! Il n'y a plus de laine qui sort du sac !
Deuxième phase de reniement: il doit y avoir une cassure dans la laine. Alors commence la recherche effrénée à travers le sac pour le reste de la pelote. Mais hélas, la réalité doit s'imposer, il n'y en a plus... Je n'ai pas tricoté assez vite et je suis à cours de laine !

Je suppose qu'il ne me reste plus qu'à recommencer et à tricoter plus vite cette fois ci !

Couleurs - Colors

The weekend before last, I dyed some wool. I did five different colors: dark purple, red, light purple, light blue and turquoise. I didn't have anything in mind when I started. I carded the colors separately, then I started mixing them. I had very roughly 1/3 dark purple, 1/3 red, 1/6 light purple, 1/6 light blue and 1/6 turquoise. I first passed a layer of the dark purple; then a layer with a strip of the turquoise on one side, a strip of the light purple on the other side and a strip of the light blue in the middle; and finally a layer of the red. I recarded the batts several times until the colors where somewhat blended together. Here is what it looked like in the middle of the blending:

Il y a deux weekends, j'ai teint un peu de laine. J'ai fait cinq couleurs différentes: violet foncé, rouge, violet clair, bleu clair et turquoise. Je n'avais rien en tête lorsque j'ai commencé. J'ai cardé les couleurs séparemment, puis j'ai commencé à les mélanger. J'avais très approximativement 1/3 de violet foncé, 1/3 de rouge, 1/6 de violet clair, 1/6 de bleu clair et 1/6 de turquoise. J'ai commencé par une couche de violet foncé; puis une couche avec une bande de turquoise d'un côté, une bande de violet clair de l'autre et une bande de bleu clair au milieu; et enfin une couche de rouge. J'ai recardé les nappes plusieurs fois jusqu'à ce que les couleurs soient un peu mélangées. Voici ce à quoi ça ressemblait pendant le cardage:

No, I didn't touch up the picture! Who knows what we are going to have next; purple eggs? So be warn if you ever come to eat at our place... But at least he used food coloring... well, I hope !

Non, je n'ai pas retouché la photo ! Qui sait ce qu'on aura la prochaine fois; des oeufs violets ? Alors soyez prévenu si jamais vous venez manger chez nous... Mais au moins il a utilisé des colorants alimentaires... enfin, j'espère !

Boutis

Yes, what I showed you earlier is Boutis. Boutis is a technique unique to the Provence area in France. In short, two layers of fabric are quilted together (no batting) and the shapes thus delimited by the stitches are stuffed. When properly done, it is completely reversible.
I just discovered the technique, by accident. While at the Silk Museum in Taulignan, I found a book called "Petits Trésors de boutis" by Francine Nicolle. I bought it and started studying it once back home. The technique seemed rather interesting, so I tried to find out more about it. This is when I found Mme Gaussen's site and specifically this:

Oui, ce que je vous ai montré plus tôt est du boutis. Le boutis est une technique unique à la Provence. En bref, deux épaisseurs de tissus sont matelassées ensembles (pas de remplissage) et les formes ainsi délimitées par les points sont remplies. Lorsque c'est fait correctement, c'est complètement réversible.
Je viens juste de découvrir cette technique, par accident. Lorsque j'étais au Musée de la Soie à Taulignan, j'ai trouvé un livre intitulé "Petits Trésors de boutis" de Francine Nicolle. Je l'ai acheté et j'ai commencé à l'étudier une fois rentrée à la maison. La technique avait l'air assez intéressante, alors j'ai essayé d'en savoir plus. I had pretty much all the tools needed: quilting needles, quilting thread, thimble, hoop, marking pencil... All I needed was the materials: the fabric and the cotton yarn for stuffing.
The fabric traditionally used is called "batiste". I have no idea what it is called in English (if it even has a name) or where to find it in the U.S. When I searched about it, I got conflicting information. Some places say that batiste is always 100% linen, but boutis related places say that their batiste is 100% cotton. Maybe linen was originally used, but due to cost, they switched to cotton? But then linen and cotton don't behave the same during washing... I don't know but I decided to use 100% cotton, because that's what all the reference to boutis that I found said, and it is more readily avaible and cheaper.
So I went to my somewhat local quilt store (http://www.theoldcountrystore.com/), which is conveniently located whithin walking distance of a tractor supply store and ME needed some tractor parts, and got two types of white 100% cotton fabrics.

J'avais pratiquement tous les outils nécessaires: aiguilles à quilter, fil à quilter, dé à coudre, tambour, crayon marqueur... Tout ce dont j'avais besoin était les matériaux: le tissus et le coton pour le rembourrage.
Le tissu traditionnellement utilisé s'appelle batiste. Je n'ai aucune idée comment ça s'appelle en anglais (s'il a un nom) ni où le trouver aux Etats-Unis. J'ai cherché à son sujet et j'ai obtenu des informations contradictoires. Certains disent que la batiste est toujours 100% lin, mais les endroits parlant du boutis disent que leur batiste est 100% coton. Peut-être que le lin était utilisé à l'origine, mais à cause de son coût élevé, le coton fut ensuite utilisé ? Mais le lin et le coton ne se comporte pas de la même façon au lavage... Je ne sais pas mais j'ai décidé d'utiliser du 100% coton parce que c'est ce que toutes les références sur le boutis disent et c'est plus facile à trouver et c'est moins cher.
Donc je suis allée dans mon magasin de quilt pas très loin (http://www.theoldcountrystore.com/), qui est situé très pratiquement à courte distance à pieds d'un marchand de pièces de tracteur et ME avait besoin de pièces, et j'ai acheté deux types de tissus blancs 100% coton.

My first realisation was the cicada and I used the lighter weight, looser weave fabric. For the stuffing, I used some cotton yarn which I had in my stash. But I think it was not thick enough. ME was able to take a better picture of it:

Ma première réalisation fut la cigale pour laquelle j'ai utilisé le tissu le plus léger avec une armature moins serrée. Pour le rembourrage, j'ai utilisé du coton que j'avais dans mes réserves. Mais je pense que c'était pas assez épais. ME a réussi à prendre une meilleure photo de la chose:

I am a little bit disappointed with it though. For comparison, here it is as pictured in the book:

Je suis un peu deçue à son sujet pourtant. Pour comparison, la voici telle qu'elle aparaît dans le livre:

Now do you see a difference (and I'm not talking about the fact that in mine the stitches and suffing are rather uneven)? The background lines run in the other direction! No, I didn't make any mistake, I just blindly followed the pattern given at the end of the book. I realized something wasn't looking right was I was stuffing the "vermicelles" (those background channels) and there was no turning around. I think that the motif just stand out much better as pictured in the book.

Vous voyez la différence (et je ne parle pas du fait que mes points et mon rembourrage ne sont pas uniformes) ? Les lignes de fond ne sont pas dans la même direction ! Non, je n'ai pas fait d'erreur, j'ai juste suivi aveuglément le patron donné à la fin du livre. J'ai réalisé que quelque chose n'allait pas lors du rembourrage des "vermicelles" mais il était trop tard pour faire demi-tour. Je pense que le motif ressort beaucoup mieux dans le livre.

For my second piece, also taken from the same book, I used the slightly thicker, tighter weave fabric. Also for the stuffing, I bought some worsted weight cotton yarn. I think it is working better, although I am not done with it yet:

Pour mon deuxième morceau, également tiré du même livre, j'ai utilisé le tissu plus épais et plus serré. Pour le rembourrage, j'ai acheté de la laine en coton plus épaisse. Je crois que ça marche mieux, mais je n'ai pas terminé:

I think I'm hooked. I'm already thinking what to try next. I've been wondering how it would turn out if I use some colored quilting thread and/or colored yarn for stuffing. Also, could I use a fabric with some simple motifs and stuff those?

Je crois que je suis accro. Je pense déjà à ce que je veux essayer ensuite. Je me suis demandé comment ça tournerait si j'utilise un fil à quilter de couleur et/ou du coton coloré pour le rembourrage. Aussi, pourrais-je utiliser un tissu avec des motifs simples et les rembourrer ?

I think I need to acquire what seems to be the bible of the boutis: "Le Manuel de Boutis de Mme GAUSSEN". But it seems to be available only in France. So if you know where I can get it, or anything boutis related, in North America, I'd like to know! Thank you.
I sign up to join an on-line French forum about boutis, but I'm still waiting for activation. That was on July 10, I wonder if I've been forgotten, rejected or maybe they saw U.S. and thought it was a joke or spam, after all nobody knows boutis in the U.S...

Je crois qu'il faut que j'acquière ce qui semble être la bible du boutis: "Le Manuel de Boutis de Mme GAUSSEN". Mais il ne semble être disponible qu'en France. Alors si vous savez où en Amérique du Nord je peux l'obtenir ainsi que n'importe quoi lié au boutis, j'aimerais bien savoir ! Merci.
Je me suis enregistrée sur un forum français de boutis, mais j'attends toujours mon activation. C'était le 10 Juillet, je me demande si j'ai été oubliée, rejetée ou peut-être ont-ils vu USA et ont pensé que c'était une blague ou spam, après tout personne ne connaît le boutis aux USA...

After that wonderful weekend in the Cévennes, we headed for Toulouse. Again, we weren't sure what was the best way to go and we took the back roads to Carcassonne. Carcassonne is a well known fortified town and it is even an UNESCO site (www.carcassonne.culture.fr). Before we got there, it was lunch time and we were hungry and tired. We tried to eat at several different places, but everybody was closed. I supposed that being Pentecost Monday didn't help! So we ended up eating at the McDonald's in Carcassonne!

Après ce weekend merveilleux dans les Cévennes, nous avond pris la direction de Toulouse. Là encore, nous n'étions pas sûrs qu'elle était la meilleure route à prendre et nous avons opté pour les petites routes jusque Carcassonne. Carcassonne est une ville fortifiée bien connue et est même un site UNESCO (www.carcassonne.culture.fr). Avant d'arriver là-bas, il était midi et nous avions faim et étions fatigués. Nous avons essayé de nous arrêter à plusieurs endroits pour manger, mais tout le monde était fermé. Je suppose que étant le lundi de la Pentecôte ne nous aidait pas ! Alors nous avons fini pas manger au McDonald's de Carcassonne !

Then we debated whether or not to stop and visit the city. It's supposed to be worthwhile, but would we be able to see much in an hour or so ? At this point, we were both exhausted (we didn't sleep that much during that gastronomical-fibery weekened), the weather was cloudy and rainy and the parking lots were full! So we skipped the visit and got on the autoroute. It was pouring down rain! But we made it to our friends' house in the suburbs of Toulouse.
That evening, we all went to restaurant in downtown Toulouse to celebrate my birthday.

Ensuite, nous nous sommes demandé si nous voulions nous arrêter pour visiter la ville. C'est sensé vouloir le coup, mais serions-nous capable de voir grand chose en environ une heure ? A ce point, nous étions tous les deux très fatigués (nous n'avons pas beaucoup dormi pendant ce weekend gastronomical fibreux), le temps était nuageux et pluvieux et les parkings étaient complets ! Donc nous avons omis la visite et avons pris l'autoroute. Il pleuvait à torrents ! Mais nous sommes arrivés chez nos amis qui habite la banlieue de Toulouse.
Ce soir-là nous sommes tous allés au restaurant dans le centre de Toulouse pour fêter mon anniversaire.

The following day, we dropped the car off at the Toulouse train station, which is in the center of town. Driving in Toulouse is not fun! Especially when you're not sure where to go. But fortunately our friends gave us a map and directions. If you ever need to return a rental car there I wish you luck! OK, I'll give you a tip: you need to take the car to the station's parking garage and leave it on the top floor. But there are no signs that tell you so! So after being frustrated not to find the place, we decided to park and go in and ask. Once you're in the structure they tell you. So we found it completely by accident. When we complained about it to the agent, her answer was "Oh well, but you found it"...
I must say that I wasn't too impressed by Toulouse. Maybe we missed the nice things there... It is nicknamed "The pink city", but what we saw was rather grey. There are several nice churches though.
We stayed in Toulouse only for a couple of days. Then we headed back to Paris taking again the TGV. This time it was a five-hour trip, as the line is not express all the way and it goes through Bordeaux.

Le jour suivant, nous avons rapporté la voiture de location à la gare de Toulouse, qui est en centre ville. Conduire à Toulouse n'est pas marrant ! Surtout lorsque vous n'êtes pas sûr où aller. Mais heureusement nos amis nous avons donné un plan et des directions. S'il vous arrive d'avoir besoin de retourner une voiture de location là-bas, je vous souhaite bonne chance ! OK, je vous donne un conseil: il faut que vous apportiez la voiture dans le parking de la gare et laissez-la au dernier étage. Mais il n'y a aucun panneau qui vous le dit ! Alors après être frustrés de ne pas trouver l'endroit, nous avons décidé de nous garer et d'aller demander à l'intérieur. Une fois que vous êtes dans le garage, il y a des panneaux. Donc nous avons trouvé complètement par accident. Lorsque nous nous sommes plains à l'employé, sa réponsé fut "bien, mais vous avez trouvé"...
Je dois dire que je n'ai pas été très impressionnée par Toulouse. Peut-être avons nous loupé les belles choses... Elle est surnommée "la ville rose", mais ce que nous avons vu était plutôt gris. Il y a plusieurs belles églises pourtant. Nous sommes restés à Toulouse seulement quelques jours. Puis nous sommes repartis pour Paris en prenant de nouveau le TGV. Cette fois-ci c'était un trajet de cinq heures, puisque la ligne n'est pas rapide tout du long et passe par Bordeaux.

In Paris, we stayed with some friends who live in the suburbs. We did a little bit of sightseeing: Sacré Coeur and place du Tertre, Vincennes Castle, Fly Boat... Here are some pictures that ME took.

A Paris, nous avons logé avec des amis qui habitent en banlieue. Nous avons fait un peu de tourisme: Sacré Coeur et la place du Tertre, château de Vincennes, bâteau-mouche... Voici quelques photos que ME a prises.

And finally, we flew back to the U.S. Airport security in Paris was a lot tighter than when we flew out of the U.S. We had to get in line many times and each time show our documents. We were also "lucky" enough to have our carry-ons thoroughly searched. Donkey didn't like being handled and squeezed and inspected... (Donkey is a stuffed animal) They also decided that my circular knitting needles could be used as a weapon since they had metal tips (although they weren't sharper or more pointy than my pen), so I had to surrender them! Disaster! Not so much the lose of the needles themselves (they were rather worn out), but what was I going to do during all that time?

Et finallement, nous avons repris l'avion pour les USA. La sécurité à l'aéroport de Paris était beaucoup plus stricte que lorsque nous sommes partis des Etats-Unis. Nous avons dû faire la queue pas mal de fois et à chaque fois montrer nos papiers. Nous avons également eu la "chance" d'avoir nos bagages à main fouillés avec soin. Donkey n'a pas aimé être manipulé, compressé et examiné sous toutes les coutures... (Donkey est un âne en peluche) Ils ont également décidé que mon aiguille circulaire pourrait être utilisée comme une arme puisqu'elle avait des pointes métalliques (bien qu'elles n'étaient pas plus tranchantes ou pointues que mon stylo), alors il a fallu que je les abandonne ! Désastre ! Pas tant la perte des aiguilles (elles étaient plutôt usées), mais qu'allais-je faire pendant tout ce temps ?

On approaching the U.S. I got a bad headache, which wasn't helped by now a rather bumpy flight. As we landed, I really felt like I was going to get sick, and I just wanted to be home and lay down!
But we first had to get into a long line to show our passports. The officer asked us a bunch of questions and I tried to stay coherent. Then he put my passport and green card into a red folder. Even though I wasn't feeling good at all, I knew that this could not be good! He sent me to an office, where after waiting for a while, an other officer drilled me with a bunch of questions. At that point, the only thing in my mind was "where is the nearest restroom??", because I was afraid that throwing up on an immigration officer might be interpreted as an insult and get me in trouble (even though I couldn't help it)... But on the other hand, if I made a run for the restroom they might think that I am trying to escape... How embarrassing... So I really couldn't remember (and didn't care) how many bottles of wine I was bringing back! Eventually they stamped my passport and let me go! After retrieving our lugage, we met with our friends who came to drive us home. I was relieved to be out of there and couldn't wait to be home!
Well, we didn't get home soon enough... good thing I had "borrowed" that paper bag the airline kindly put in the pocket in front of you!

A l'approche des Etats-Unis, j'ai eu un sévère mal de tête, qui n'était pas aidé par un vol plutôt tumultueux maintenant. Alors que nous attérissions, j'ai vraiment cru que j'allais être malade et je voulais être à la maison et m'allonger ! Mais d'abord il nous a fallu faire une longue queue pour montrer nos passeports. L'agent nous a posé un tas de questions et j'essayais de rester cohérente. Puis il a mis mon passeport et ma carte verte dans un dossier rouge. Bien que je ne me sentais pas bien du tout, je savais que tout ceci ne sentait rien de bon ! Il m'a envoyé dans un bureau, où après avoir attendu un bout de temps, un autre agent m'a bombardée de questions. A ce point, la seule chose que j'avais en tête était "où sont les toilettes les plus proches ??", parce que j'avais bien peur que vomir sur un agent d'immigration pourrait être interprété comme une insulte et pourrait m'attirer plus d'ennuis (même si je ne pouvais pas m'en empêcher)... Mais d'un autre côté, si je me précipite pour les toilettes ils pourraient penser que j'essaye de m'échapper... Vraiment embarrassant... Alors vraiment je ne me souvenais pas combien de bouteilles de vin (et je m'en moquais bien) je ramenais avec moi ! Finally ils ont tamponné mon passeport et m'on laissé partir ! Après avoir récupéré nos bagages, nous avons trouvé nos amis qui étaient venus nous chercher. J'étais soulagée d'être sortie de là et j'étais impatiente d'être à la maison ! Bien, nous ne sommes pas arrivés assez tôt... c'est une bonne chose que j'avais "emprunté" ce sac en papier que la compagnie aérienne gentillement place dans la poche devant vous !

When we got home, our biggest concern was "the children". Were they all OK? The first one to show up was Agnes. She came running down the side-walk shortly after we arrived. The others took longer to show up, but they eventually all did one by one. The last one was Alex, who we didn't see until several days after we were back.
Since it was too late that day to go to the vet to pick up Apollo, we went the following day. He didn't seem too traumatized by his stay in prison. He wasn't overly happy or upset to see us (or if he was, he didn't show it). We were told that he was allowed to come out of his cage and run around every morning, and we had sent him a postcard... Back home, he got back in his routine right away.
Well, that was a nice trip, but it was also good to be back!

Une fois arrivés, notre plus gros soucis était "les enfants". Allaient-ils tous bien ? La première à se montrer fut Agnes. Elle est arrivée en courant sur le trottoir peu après notre arrivée. Les autres ont mis un peu plus de temps pour se montrer, mais éventuellement ils l'ont tous fait un par un. Le dernier fut Alex, que nous n'avons vu que plusieurs jours après notre retour.
Comme ce jour-là il était trop tard pour aller chez le vétérinaire récupérer Apollo, nous y sommes allés le lendemain. Il n'avait pas l'air trop traumatisé par son séjour en prison. Il n'était pas excessivement heureux ou mécontent de nous voir (du moins s'il l'était il ne l'a pas montré). On nous a dit qu'il était autorisé à sortir de sa cage et à courir tous les matins, et puis nous lui avions envoyé une carte postale... De retour à la maison, il est retrouvé de suite sa routine.
Bien, ce fut un beau voyage, mais c'était également bon d'être rentré !

Apollo dit "Heureusement que je suis de retour pour m'occuper de la lessive ! Vraiment je ne sais pas ce qu'ils feraient sans moi... Tout ceci est épuisant..."

Apollo said "Good thing that I am back to take care of the laundry! Really I don't know what they would do without me... All this is exhausting..."
